PTE vs IELTS in 2027: Which Test Is Best for Nepali Students?

PTE vs IELTS

PTE vs IELTS is one of the first big choices for Nepali students. In the PTE vs IELTS choice, both tests prove your English. Schools and visa offices use both. But one test may fit you better. The right pick depends on your country, your school, and how you like to test.

Contents hide

Short answer: Many schools and visa offices use both IELTS and PTE Academic. The best pick depends on your country, your school, your English skills, and your test style. Check your school’s rules first. Then settle PTE vs IELTS by picking the test where you can score well.

PTE vs IELTS?

1. Introduction: Understanding PTE vs IELTS

An English test is a key step for most study abroad plans. It shows a school where you can follow classes in English. It also helps some visa offices check your English.

Why Nepali Students Must Choose Carefully

Tests cost money. Scores expire. A wrong test can waste months. So check the rules before you decide PTE vs IELTS.

Many students mix up two ideas. The first is university admission. Your school sets its own English rule. The second is visa rules. A government sets those. A test score can help with both. But a good score does not promise a visa.

IELTS and PTE at a Glance

The biggest PTE vs IELTS difference is speaking. IELTS has a face-to-face speaking test with an examiner. PTE is fully on a computer. IELTS uses bands from 0 to 9. PTE uses scores from 10 to 90.

This guide covers IELTS Academic and PTE Academic. These are the versions for study. Do not mix them with IELTS General Training or PTE Core. We explain those later in this PTE vs IELTS guide.

The Direct Answer

In PTE vs IELTS, no test is best for everyone. Many schools in New Zealand, Australia, the UK and Canada accept both. The right choice comes from your school’s list, your skills, and your test style.

2. What Is IELTS Academic?

IELTS stands for International English Language Testing System. The British Council, IDP, and Cambridge run it. IELTS Academic is for study at college and university level.

IELTS Academic Test Format

IELTS says the Academic test takes 2 hours and 45 minutes. It has four parts. Many students in Nepal take it on a computer. Some centres also list a computer test with Writing on paper. Some listings still show paper tests. Check the booking page for your date.

Read the official IELTS Academic page for the latest format.

IELTS Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking

PartTime
ListeningAbout 30 minutes
Reading60 minutes
Writing60 minutes
Speaking11 to 14 minutes

Listening and Speaking are the same in Academic and General Training. Reading and Writing are different. Always book the Academic version for study.

In the Speaking test, you talk with a trained examiner. Some places also offer video call speaking.

IELTS Band Scoring System

IELTS gives a band from 0 to 9 for each part. Then it gives an overall band. Half bands, like 6.5, are common.

Schools often set a rule for each part too. For example, “6.5 overall with no part below 6.0.” So one weak part can cause a problem.

IELTS Results and One Skill Retake

IELTS says most computer results come within 1 to 2 days. Some pages in Nepal still say 3 to 5 days. Ask your test centre.

IELTS One Skill Retake lets some students retake one part. It has strict rules. According to IELTS:

  • Your first test must be IELTS on the computer.
  • You must retake within 60 days.
  • You can use it only once per test.
  • Not every centre offers it.

Also, some schools may not accept it. Read the One Skill Retake rules and ask your school first.

3. What Is PTE Academic?

PTE stands for Pearson Test of English. PTE Academic is for study, and for some visas in Australia and New Zealand. Pearson says it is a single computer-based test of about 2 hours. See Pearson’s PTE Academic page.

PTE Academic Test Format

You take PTE at a secure test centre. You cannot take it at home. You wear a headset and use a computer.

The test has three parts. Pearson lists these times:

PartTimeQuestion types
Speaking and Writing76 to 84 minutes9
Reading23 to 30 minutes5
Listening31 to 39 minutes8

Some tasks test two skills at once. For example, one task tests both listening and speaking. Allow a little extra time for check-in.

PTE Speaking, Writing, Reading and Listening

In Speaking, you talk into a microphone. You do not talk with a person. Writing includes a short summary and an essay. Reading and Listening use many question types.

PTE is a new format in some parts. Pearson updated the test in 2025. So use new practice material. Old PTE vs IELTS books may not match the new test.

PTE Academic Scoring System

PTE scores run from 10 to 90. You get an overall score and a score for each skill. Pearson says AI scores the test. Some answers also get a human expert check.

Institutions set their own minimum scores. Pearson gives a typical guide on its scoring page:

  • Foundation courses: 36 to 50
  • Undergraduate degrees: 51 to 60
  • Postgraduate degrees: 57 to 67

Always check your own school. These are only guides.

PTE Results and Retake Options

Pearson says results come typically within two days. Some can take up to five business days.

Your PTE score is valid for two years. You can share it with schools for free.

If you want a retake, you book the full test again. PTE does not offer a one-skill retake like IELTS. You can reschedule for free up to 14 days before the test. Check Pearson’s cancel and refund rules before you book.

4. PTE vs IELTS: Complete Comparison for Nepali Students

Here is a simple PTE vs IELTS table. It compares IELTS Academic with PTE Academic.

PTE vs IELTS times and rules can change. Check the official pages before you book.

Examination Format and Duration

IELTS is longer. It also has a Speaking test that may be on a different time slot, depending on the centre. PTE puts all four skills in one sitting.

Speaking Test: Human Examiner vs Computer

In IELTS, you talk with a person. You can ask for repeats in some parts. In PTE, you talk to a computer. The test keeps moving. You cannot ask for a repeat.

This is a key PTE vs IELTS point. Some students feel calm with a person. Others feel better with a microphone. Neither feeling is wrong.

Reading and Listening Differences

IELTS Reading has long passages. IELTS Listening has set sections. PTE has many short tasks with mixed skills. PTE audio plays once.

In PTE vs IELTS, both need good note-taking and focus. Try a sample test of each before you decide.

Writing Assessment Differences

IELTS Writing has two tasks in 60 minutes. A human reads them. PTE has shorter writing tasks. A computer scores them, with some human review.

IELTS may feel closer to class writing. PTE may suit students who write short and clear.

Scoring System and Result Timelines

IELTS bands are in half steps. PTE scores move in single points. A small gain in PTE can show up as a smaller step.

PTE vs IELTS result times are close on computer tests. IELTS says most computer results come in 1 to 2 days. Pearson says two days for PTE. Plan extra time for school deadlines.

Examination Experience and Preparation

Many Nepali students prepare in classes. Classes can help with timing and practice. Whichever side of PTE vs IELTS you pick, take a full mock test first. See ICCC’s guide to IELTS preparation in Nepal and its page on best PTE classes in Kathmandu.

5. PTE vs IELTS Score Comparison: Understanding the Difference

PTE vs IELTS scores use different scales. So simple math will not work. You need a comparison table.

How IELTS Band Scores Work

IELTS bands run from 0 to 9. Each skill gets a band. The overall band is average. A school may ask for a minimum in each skill.

How PTE Scores Work

PTE runs from 10 to 90. You get an overall score and four skill scores. Pearson says the test uses the Global Scale of English.

PTE to IELTS Score Conversion Chart

Pearson published new research in July 2025. It updated how PTE Academic compares with IELTS Academic. Many old charts online are now out of date. For example, old charts often show IELTS 6.5 as PTE 58.

This table uses Pearson’s official score chart. The PTE score shows the lowest score linked to each IELTS band.

IELTS Academic bandLowest linked PTE Academic scoreAbout this PTE range
5.53939 to 46
6.04747 to 54
6.55555 to 62
7.06363 to 70
7.57171 to 78
8.07979 to 85

Read Pearson’s concordance summary for details. This table compares only PTE Academic and IELTS Academic. It does not apply to PTE Core or IELTS General Training.

Are IELTS and PTE Scores Exactly Equivalent?

No. PTE vs IELTS numbers are close, but not exact. Remember these points:

  • The chart is a guide from research. It is not a math formula.
  • Each school can set its own rule.
  • Each government can set its own rule.
  • Single skill scores matter, not only the overall score.

Here is an example. Pearson links IELTS 6.5 to PTE 55 or higher. But the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) lists PTE 58 for the same level of study as IELTS 6.5. Always use the number your school or visa office gives you.

ICCC tip: Before you book any test, ask your school for its English rule in writing. ICCC counselors can help you check it. You can also read how we guide students on our page for IELTS and PTE test preparation.

6. Which English Test Is Easier for Nepali Students?

In PTE vs IELTS, no test is easier for everyone. No official source says that IELTS or PTE is easier. The test that feels easier is the one that suits your style.

Is PTE Easier Than IELTS?

Some students find PTE simple because it has no examiner. Others find the many task types hard. PTE also moves fast. You need to switch between tasks quickly.

So PTE is not easy for all. It is different.

Is IELTS Speaking Easier for Nepali Students?

Some students speak better with a person. They can use eye contact and tone. Others feel nervous in front of an examiner. For them, a microphone may feel safer.

Try a mock speaking test in both styles. Then see how you feel.

Which Test Is Better for Computer-Based Learners?

If you type fast and like screens, PTE may suit you. You can also take IELTS on a computer. Many centres in Nepal list computer IELTS. Try both on a computer first.

Which Test Suits Students Who Prefer Human Interaction?

IELTS Speaking has a human examiner. That may help students who like real conversation. Trained people also check IELTS Writing.

Your best PTE vs IELTS step is a full mock test of each type. Compare your scores and your stress level. Then choose.

7. PTE vs IELTS: Examination Fees in Nepal

PTE vs IELTS fees change. So always confirm on the booking page. Here is what we could verify in November 2026.

IELTS Examination Fees in Nepal

IELTS.org lists NPR 36,000 for IELTS Academic on a computer at IDP’s Kathmandu test room. It lists NPR 36,400 for IELTS UKVI Academic on computer. See the IELTS.org centre page.

Some websites still show older fees, like NPR 33,000. Do not trust old pages. Check the British Council Nepal or IDP booking page for your test date.

For more IELTS fee updates, see ICCC’s page on the IELTS exam fee in Nepal.

PTE Academic Examination Fees in Nepal

Pearson shows your local price in a price finder tool. We could not confirm a fixed price from Pearson’s public page for Nepal. So use the Pearson test centres and fees page and the price finder. Check whether the price is in NPR or US dollars.

Additional Preparation and Retake Costs

Add these costs to your PTE vs IELTS plan:

  • Classes or tutors. Prices differ by centre. Ask for the fee in writing.
  • Practice tests. Both IELTS and Pearson offer practice material. Some is free, and some costs money.
  • Retakes. For PTE, you pay for a full test again. For IELTS One Skill Retake, the price varies by centre.
  • Rescheduling. For PTE, Pearson says you can reschedule for free up to 14 days before the test.

8. Which English Test Is Accepted in New Zealand, Australia, UK and Canada?

The PTE vs IELTS choice raises two different questions. First, does your school accept the test? Second, does the visa office need a test? The answers can differ. Also, the exact visa type matters.

English Proficiency Test for New Zealand Student Visa

Immigration New Zealand (INZ) has a clear rule for student visas. Your school must confirm your English is good enough to pass your course. English test results are not mandatory for the visa. But they can help show you a plan to study. See the INZ fee paying student visa page.

Schools follow rules from NZQA. These rules cover study at levels 3 to 10. NZQA’s table of English scores lists these minimums:

Study levelIELTS AcademicPTE Academic
Level 45.5, no part below 542, no part below 36
Level 6 and 7 (diploma and bachelor)6.0, no part below 5.550, no part below 42
Level 8 to 10 (postgraduate)6.5, no part below 6.058, no part below 50

Universities may ask for more. The test must be from the last two years, according to NZQA. IELTS must be taken at an official test centre. PTE must be taken at a PTE test centre. NZQA also says IELTS One Skill Retake can be accepted.

There is one more 2026 change. TOEFL iBT launched a new format and scoring on 21 January 2026. NZQA says the new scores do not match its table. So non-university providers cannot accept it.

Learn more in ICCC’s New Zealand student visa guide. You can also read about Masters in New Zealand.

PTE vs IELTS for Australian Student Visa

Australia’s Department of Home Affairs accepts nine approved tests for student visas. These include IELTS Academic and PTE Academic. You must take the test at a secure test centre. Home Affairs does not accept at-home or online tests. See Study Australia and the Home Affairs English language page.

Reports show new student visa minimums for tests taken on or after 7 August 2025. They are IELTS 6.0 overall and PTE Academic 47 overall. The visa minimums are lower for some students who join English pathway courses. Home Affairs also says PTE Academic has the same name as the older test, but the test and scores are different. So make sure your score is from the new version.

Your university may ask for a higher score than the visa. The visa also has other rules, like Genuine Student and money checks. Read ICCC’s Australia student visa guide and our page on study in Australia from Nepal.

PTE vs IELTS for UK University Admissions and Visas

For a UK Student visa, GOV.UK says you need English at CEFR B2 for degree level or above. For courses below degree level, you need B1. You can prove English with a Secure English Language Test (SELT) from an approved provider. Some universities can also check your English in their own way for degree courses.

So the UK has two steps:

  • Admission. Your university tells you which test and score it accepts.
  • Visa. The visa depends on your course level and sponsor.

Pearson says PTE Academic fits UK university applications. PTE Academic UKVI is for other cases. Pearson lists study below degree level, non-university providers, and some work visas. See PTE Academic UKVI. IELTS also has a UKVI version. Ask your university which one you need before you book.

For more, read ICCC’s UK student visa from Nepal guide.

PTE vs IELTS for Canadian Universities and Immigration

For a Canada study permit, each school sets its English rule. IRCC relies on the school acceptance and the school’s language rule for the permit. Many Canadian schools accept IELTS Academic. Some accept PTE Academic. Check each school.

Later steps differ. The Post-Graduation Work Permit has its own test list. IRCC accepts IELTS General Training, CELPIP-General, and PTE Core. It does not accept IELTS Academic for this. Pearson says PTE Core is for Canadian permanent residence and citizenship. So an admission test may not work for these later steps.

Read ICCC’s page on whether PTE is acceptable for Canada.

A note on the USA. US universities set their own English rules. Pearson says many US schools accept PTE Academic. This includes all Ivy League universities. Still, check each school’s page. Admission and visa steps are separate.

9. PTE vs IELTS: Which Test Should You Choose?

Use this step-by-step PTE vs IELTS guide.

  1. Pick your country and your school first.
  2. Find the school’s English test list and minimum scores.
  3. Check any visa rule for your course level.
  4. Take a mock test of each type.
  5. Choose the test where you feel stronger.

Choose IELTS If You Prefer Human Speaking Assessment

IELTS may suit you if you:

  • like to talk with a person,
  • want a test accepted for many routes,
  • may need IELTS for UKVI or another version,
  • like longer reading and writing tasks.

Choose PTE If You Prefer Computer-Based Testing

PTE may suit you if you:

  • feel at ease with a computer and headset,
  • do not want a face-to-face speaking test,
  • like short tasks,
  • want a test that Pearson says gives results in about two days.

Consider Your Target University and Country First

This is the most important PTE vs IELTS step. Some schools list both tests. Some list only one. A visa may need a special version. So the choice of test can follow the country and course.

Consider Your English Strengths and Preparation Time

If your speaking is weak, think about which style helps you more. If your typing is slow, try the computer first. Give yourself enough time to practise. Also book early. You may need time for a retake.
